MANDATORY COURSES AND REQUIREMENTS

RESPECT IN SPORT

Respect in Sport  is an online course required by all coaches in Manitoba (not just football coaches).  This course helps promote proper understanding and values through a simple and convenient online training course for coaches and sport leaders. It is designed as a tool to assist coaches in identifying and dealing with abuse, neglect, harassment, and bullying in sport.  Approximately 2.5 hours – Free online course

MAKING HEAD WAY IN FOOTBALL

NCCP Making Head Way in Football is the free, online answer to the prevalence and ambiguity of concussions football. Parents, coaches, and athletes all benefit from knowing as much as possible about concussions; this online learning tool is designed to help coaches gain the knowledge and skills required to ensure the safety of their athletes.  After completing the NCCP Making Head Way in Football module, you will understand:

  • how to prevent concussions;
  • how to recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion;
  • what to do when you suspect an athlete has a concussion; and
  • how to ensure athletes return to play safely.

BACKGROUND SCREENING

A comprehensive Background Check is required for all adults working with minors in all football programs.  Coaches or volunteers are required to complete or confirm that a background check has been completed within the previous 3 years with a satisfactory outcome before participation is permitted.  Football Manitoba has partnered with Sterling BackCheck to provide quick and inexpensive screening for all adult volunteers. 

Please contact our office if you require a background check to be completed for the current year, or to provide evidence of a satisfactory background check completed elsewhere (i.e. for employment or other volunteer positions).

Screening Cost through Football Manitoba $25.00 plus GST

 

SAFE CONTACT (TACKLE COACHES ONLY)

Safe Contact is designed for all coaches who coach tackle football.  Techniques and drills to teach safe contact are highlighted, in addition to learning how to analyze and correct athletic performance.  Upon completing this module coaches will be able to:  (not required for Flag coaches at this time)

  • Address Fear of Contact
  • Teach Safe Tackling
  • Teach Safe Blocking
  • Teach Safe Contact for Ball Carriers
  • Analyze Performance
  • Safe Contact course generally consist of a one day (8 hour) workshop.  It is mandatory for coaching all ages of athletes who participate in tackle football.

The goal of this module is to provide coaches with the tools required to create a safer environment for their athletes, while improving overall skill level.

COMMUNITY SPORT INITIATION – NOVICE COACH

The Community Stream teaches coaches the fundamentals of football with a recreational focus. The skills you will learn are ideal for all volunteer coaches who have children who participate in football, or who wish to assist participants of all ages who are new to the sport. This 8 hour workshop will give you skills and confidence in the key areas of:

  • practice planning
  • making ethical decisions
  • communication skills
  • fundamental TACKLE FOOTBALL skills and understanding the game of Flag Football at the youth level.

All HEAD COACHES must complete this in their FIRST year. Although recommended for all coaches, ASSISTANT COACHES in their first year must complete this prior to their second year of coaching.  PREREQUISITES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Community Sport E-LEARNING online course.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPETITION – POSITION COACH

Coaches will be taught basic and intermediate skills required to become a trained position coach in offensive, defensive or special teams position skills by an expert coach. The expert coach will also provide drill progressions, and will demonstrate how to incorporate these tools into practice plans.
Upon completing this module, coaches will be able to do the following:

  • Plan a Practice
  • Analyze Performance
  • Provide support to athletes in training
  • Make Ethical Decisions (MED)
  • Position-specific technical material

After completion of the 10-11 hour classroom portion of the Intro to Competition course, coaches will also attend a 2-3 hour Tactical and Position specific module session at an on field workshop with an elite level coach for their specific position.

Upon completion of this course the coach will have achieved IN TRAINING status.  When all required training and submissions are satisfied the Coordinator will have achieved TRAINED COORDINATOR status To become certified the coach will need to be evaluated during a practice or evaluation event by a Certified Coach Evaluator.  When the evaluation is completed satisfactorily the coach is considered to be a CERTIFIED COORDINATOR.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPETITION – COORDINATOR

The NCCP Coordinator workshop teaches coaches what it takes to be a successful coordinator and how to develop offensive, defensive or special team systems all taught by a Master Coach Developer and subject matter expert coaches. Coaches will then learn how to apply what they have learned to their systems and how to develop successful game plans. 

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS WORKSHOP? This workshop is ideal for Train to Train and Learn to Compete coaches working with athletes between 13 and 18 who are at the junior and senior high school levels, as well as summer or club levels.  Upon completing this module, coaches will be credited with understanding:

    1. Mentorship Skills
    2. Nutrition
    3. Analytical Skills
    4. Role of the Coordinator
    5. Tactical Systems

The COORDINATOR workshop is taught over three days (both in-class and in gym/on field), with the following breakdown:
Friday: approx. 4 Hours
Saturday: approx. 8 Hours
Sunday: approx. 6 Hours

Currently this schedule may differ while courses are offered remotely (online).  Consult the COACHING CLINIC schedule for current format.
Coaches will need to choose one of the following Systems topics based on their role and current focus.  Depending on the delivery schedule, coaches may be able to take multiple systems modules if working toward their Head Coach Certification:

Offensive Coordinator
Defensive Coordinator
Special Teams

PREREQUISITES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

NCCP Safe Contact workshop
MED Online Evaluation
Trained or Certified in at least 2 different positions for either Offense or Defense
Submit a Portfolio of artifacts that illustrate the coach’s ability to perform the role of a coordinator

Upon completion of this course the coach will have achieved COORDINATOR IN TRAINING status. INTRODUCTION TO COMPETITION – HEAD COACH

Being the head coach of a football program is no simple task, as many duties and responsibilities fall into your lap once you are assigned the position. A head football coach is someone who organizes and directs a football team. That includes everyone from the assistant coaches and players to trainers and team managers. A head football coach must possess strong communication and problem-solving skills, and be highly organized and innovative. A head coach needs to have the ability to motivate and delegate, and understand how to improve assistant coaches, players and the team as a whole. As a head coach you have to be an organizer, a manager, a teacher, a physical trainer, a boss, an
evaluator, a mentor, a role model, an adviser, and most importantly a leader.

Upon completing this module, coaches will be credited with understanding:

Role of the head coach
Performing Evaluations and the process
Design a yearly training program
Managing a football program

COMPETITION DEVELOPMENT COACH

Required by coaches at the University, Junior, inter-Provincial, National and International competition level.
Restricted entry – contact Football Manitoba for eligibility requirements.

Competition Development trains coaches for the highest possible levels on preparing their athletes to perform at the elite level of competition.  Coaches receive the elite-level instruction from Expert Coach Facilitators who are currently involved in coaching this level, usually professional or university coaches.  Advanced Courses on Managing Conflict, Leading Drug Free Sport, Mentorship, Nutrition, Prevention and Recovery and Athletic Abilities, combined with advanced Technical and Tactical components all combine to prepare coaches to teach athletes at the highest level competitions.
