REQUIRED TRAINING
The following are required by all tackle football coaches in Manitoba regardless of the level or age of the athletes they are coaching. Additional courses are required, specific to the age of the athletes you will be coaching.
FIRST YEAR TACKLE COACHES
RESPECT IN SPORT (Go to site)
The Respect in Sport Program assists coaches, referees, trainers and managers with identifying and dealing with abuse, neglect, harassment and bullying in sport. The online course curriculum is divided into six modules, which only take 2.5 hours, and can be completed at the user’s own pace. Free for Manitoba Coaches.
MAKING HEAD WAY IN SPORT (Go to Training)
Free one-hour course on understanding concussions, safety and ways to reduce the risk of injury. You must log into the Locker with your NCCP number to access the course.
UNDERSTANDING THE RULE OF TWO (Go to training)
This is a free 20 minute course. The goal of the Rule of Two is to ensure all interactions and communications are open, observable and justifiable. It is one of three pillars of the Responsible Coaching Movement, along with background screening and ethics training.
COMPREHENSIVE BACKGROUND CHECK
This should include a Criminal Record check, and where available, a Child Abuse Registry and/or Vulnerable Sector check completed within the past three years– Coaches that have this requirement already through their employment or through another organization may complete and submit an annual declaration form to confirm their background check is clear and less than 3 years old.
Contact your home program for instructions on obtaining your background check. For those with a current background check, please download the Annual Declaration, complete and provide to your home program. (Flag coaches must submit this form to Football Manitoba by emailing technical@footballmanitoba.com).

PRIOR TO SECOND YEAR
SAFE CONTACT – All Head Coaches require Safe Contact in their FIRST YEAR
Safe Contact is designed for all coaches who coach tackle football. Techniques and drills to teach safe contact are highlighted, in addition to learning how to analyze and correct athletic performance.
Safe Contact course generally consist of a one day (8 hour) workshop.
It is mandatory for coaching all ages of athletes who participate in tackle football. The goal of this module is to provide coaches with the tools required to create a safer environment for their athletes, while improving overall skill level.

COMMUNITY SPORT COACH WORKSHOP
8 hour course specifically for coaching young players with proper coaching methods for this age group.The Community Stream teaches coaches the fundamentals of football planning and team management. The skills you will learn are ideal for all volunteer coaches who have children who participate in football, or who wish to assist participants of all ages who are new to the sport.
COMP INTRO POSITION COACH WORKSHOP
12 hour course for coaching players entering the high school age group
focusing on positional skill development and strategies for managing this age group. 1.5 days
COMP INTRO POSITION MODULE
This 2-hour course is specifically geared to one individual position. Understanding the abilities and what should be expected from players at this age and level. This is required to complete the Position Coach Workshop – delivered separately.
MAKE ETHICAL DECISIONS EVALUATION (online)
An evaluation to ensure that coaches understand and can implement the values covered in the MED module as part of the Position Coach workshop.
