TRAINERS – FIRST AIDERS
All volunteer staff dealing directly with players must have the following:
RESPECT IN SPORT
(Go to training)
The Respect in Sport Program assists coaches, referees, trainers and managers with identifying and dealing with abuse, neglect, harassment and bullying in sport. The online course curriculum is divided into six modules, which only take 2.5 hours, and can be completed at the user’s own pace. Free for Manitoba Volunteers.
UNDERSTANDING THE RULE OF TWO
(Go to training)
This is a free 20 minute course. The goal of the Rule of Two is to ensure all interactions and communications are open, observable and justifiable. It is one of three pillars of the Responsible Coaching Movement, along with background screening and ethics training.
You must log into the Locker with your NCCP number to access the course.
COMPREHENSIVE BACKGROUND CHECK
This should include a Criminal Record check, Child Abuse Registry and/or Vulnerable Sector check completed within the past three years– volunteers that have this requirement already through their employment or through another organization may complete an annual declaration form to confirm their background check is clear and less than 3 years old.
Contact your home program for instructions on obtaining your background check. For those with a current background check, please download the Annual Declaration, complete and provide to your home program.
Team First-Aiders and trainers play a vital role in our football programming to keep all athletes healthy and safe.
The following are standardized requirements for those performing the duties of a team trainer / First-Aider.
First Aider/Trainer Guidelines for Contact Programs
All amateur tackle football programs must have a qualified individual present during all practices and games based on the requirements below. These requirements apply to all member organizations and sanctioned tackle programs, leagues, schools, clubs and camps.
These vary based on the age of the athletes participating. The Athletic First Aider Program (AFAP) is administered by the Manitoba Athletic Therapists Association (MATA).
Prerequisite: having a current First Aid certificate is required to become certified through MATA.
Two levels for trainers for tackle programming are as follows:
TRAINER ONE – for athletes U10 and under
Emergency First Aid/CPR-C/AED certificate required
TRAINER TWO – for athletes U12 and older
Emergency First Aid/CPR-C/AED certificate required
plus MATA AFAP Certificate
The Athletic First Aider Program (AFAP) certificate is valid for a period of three years from the certification date. Any certification expiring at any point during the current season must be re-certified prior to its expiry.
